Herbs perennial or rarely vines; terrestrial, epiphytic, or saprophytic; terrestrial and saprophytic plants often with tubers or thick rhizomes, epiphytic plants mostly with pseudobulbs, fleshy stems, or cordlike roots with a layer of velumen. Leaves basal or cauline, linear to orbicular, sometimes subterete, leathery, membranous, or succulent, simple. Scape or inflorescence terminal or lateral; inflorescence a spike, raceme, or panicle, sometimes reduced to a solitary flower. Flowers usually bisexual, zygomorphic, mostly resupinate at anthesis due to 180° twist or 90° curve in ovary or pedicel. Perianth usually of 6 segments in two whorls; outer three (sepals) often colored, inner ones composed of two lateral petals and one central labellum (lip); labellum usually larger and complex in structure, sometimes extended at base to form a spur or saccate nectary. Style, stigmas, and stamens united to form a column (gynostemium); column with one anther (rarely two or three anthers) at or near summit, adaxially producing in front a small outgrowth (rostellum) above stigma, sometimes extending at base into a column-foot, to which lateral sepals adnate at base to form a mentum (chinlike sac); anther resting in clinandrium (bed), 2-celled. Ovary inferior, 3-carpellate, 1-celled or rarely 3-celled; pollen grains usually agglutinated into mealy, waxy, or bony masses (pollinia); pollinia usually 2--8, either tapering below into a stalk (caudicle) or attaching to one (or two) strap-shaped tissues of stigmatic origin (stipe), both ending in a sticky viscidium; pollinia (often with caudicle) and viscidium (often with stipe) constituting pollinarium. Fruit a capsule or rarely a fleshy pod. Seeds numerous, minute, generally fusiform, without endosperm.
Approximately 700 genera and 20,000 species worldwide, mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions; 173 genera and 1247 species in China (# endemic??).
