Cyperus subgen. Iria L. C. Rich. ex Pers.; Iria (L. C. Rich.) Hedwig; Iriha O. Ktze.
Small to medium annual or perennial herbs, sometimes rhizomatous. Culms usually tufted, slender, 3- or 5-angled or flattened. Leaves basal, sometimes reduced to bladeless sheaths; blades linear to filiform, usually dorsiventral and canaliculated, often cellular-reticulate on upper surface, rarely ensiform; ligules if present membranous or of a fringe of pubescence. Inflorescence terminal, simple to decompound, rarely capitate or a single terminal spikelet. Spikelets solitary or fascicled, ovoid, ellipsoid or subglobose, terete or flattened, bearing several to many flowers; glumes spirally arranged or lower ones or all distichous. Flowers bisexual, without hypogynous bristles; stamens 1-3; style-base enlarged, not persistent on achene. Achenes biconvex or trigonous, the surface reticulate or verruciferous, or with both reticulation and verrucae, sometimes stipitate.

Leaves cauline reduced to bladeless sheaths, those of sterile shoot usually short-bladed; sheaths cylindrical, 2-18 cm long, obliquely truncate; blade linear when well-developed, 70-250 x 1.5-2 mm; ligule absent. Inflorescence simple to compound, 2-10 x 1.5-7 cm; bracts 2-3, narrowly lanceolate, margins scabrid, the longest 0.5-1 cm long; primary rays 2-10, unequal, 1-5 cm long. Spikelets 3-40, solitary, broadly ovate to broadly elliptic, 3-8 x 3-4 mm, obtuse, terete, densely many-flowered. Glumes numerous, spiral, ovate to ovate-elliptic, 1.8-2.7 x 1-1.5 mm, obtuse to mucronate at apex, membranous, yellow- or rusty-brown, scarcely keeled, 3-nerved in center. Stamens 2-3; anthers c 0.5 mm long. Style triquetrous or trifid, glabrous, dilated at base; stigmas 3, rarely 2. Achenes obovate or obovate-orbicular, 0.8-1 by 0.5-0.7 mm, shortly stipitate, maturing milky-yellow, obscurely cancellated with transversely oblong cells, rarely sparsely verruculose.

Culms tufted, 5-50 cm, glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Leaves linear or setaceous, slightly shorter to longer than culms, pubescent or glabrescent, acute or obtuse at apex; sheaths coriaceous, nearly truncate at apex, membranous part broad, pale brown. Bracts 3-4, leaf-like, usually 1-2 bracts longer than inflorescence, glabrous or hairy; anthelae compound, rarely simple, loose or compact, 5-9 x 3-6 cm; spikelets solitory, ovate, elliptic or oblong, 4-12 x 2.5 mm, many-flowered; glumes ovate, oblong-ovate or oblong, 2-2.5 mm, brown, shining, 3-5-veined, mid-vein extending into mucro; stamens 1-2, filaments short; style compressed, longer than stamen, ciliate at upper part, stigmas 2. Achenes broadly obovate, biconvex, ca. 1 mm, with 7-9 obvious vertical ribs, reiculation nearly transverse oblong, without verrucae, with brown stipes.
