Herbs perennial. Rhizomes usually very short, sometimes obliquely and shortly creeping, rarely stoloniferous and spreading. Stems (culms) usually tufted, rarely scattered. Leaves basal or subbasal; basal leaf sheaths persistent and usually prominent; blades flat, folded, involute, or filiform. Inflorescence terminal, paniculate to spicate, sometimes unisexual; lowest bract leafy or glume-like, sheathless; branches of inflorescence sessile. Spikelets subtended by glumes (bracteoles), unisexual or bisexual; bisexual spikelets with one pistillate flower at base and one to several staminate flowers at distal parts enclosed by prophylls; unisexual spikelets with a solitary pistillate flower within prophylls. Sterile rachilla in pistillate spikelet usually present. Flowers unisexual. Pistillate flowers reduced to naked pistils; ovary 2- or 3-carpellate; style elongated; stigmas 3 or 2. Staminate flowers subtended by staminate glumes; stamens 1--3; filaments free, longer than glumes, slender; staminate glumes usually distinct in shape from spikelet glumes. Achenes trigonous or flattened, included in prophylls.

About 60 species: mainly distributed in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere; 45 species in China (??# endemic).

After further study of specimens (including the type Ludlow, Sherriff & Hicks 20725, BM), the author considered it was most closely related to K. kansuensis Kükenthal. Noltie (pers. comm.) indicated that this species, with larger inflorescence, glumes, and prophylls, with awned glumes, and distributed in the Himalayas, differed from K. kansuensis, of which inflorescence, glumes and prophylls are smaller, glumes usually not awned, and distributed in W China.
