Herbs, perennial or rarely biennial (in Taraxacum nutans), acaulescent, scapose. Leaves in a basal rosette; leaf blade margin entire, sinuate, or runcinate-pinnatifid. Scapes 1 to numerous, arachnoid or glabrous. Capitulum solitary on leafless scapes. Involucre campanulate to oblong; bracts herbaceous, in many series; bracts of outer series short, often spreading and reflexed at maturity; bracts of innermost series erect, subequal. Receptacle flat, glabrous. Ligule usually yellow, rarely white or red to purple, 5-lobed, usually with dark stripe. Anthers sagittate at base. Style branches slender, apex obtuse. Achene body oblong to narrowly so, 4- or 5-angled to slightly compressed, 5- to 10--ribbed, spiculate to tuberlate in apical part or throughout, rarely smooth, apex abruptly contracted into or gradually narrowing in a conic to cylindric cone; beak often very long and slender. Pappus copious, trichomes simple, unequal in length, persistent.
About 2000 species (microspecies), mainly in temperate to Arctic regions, especially abundant in northern hemisphere; 67 species (20 endemic) in China.
