Ca. 400 species: Asia, Australia, Europe, W North America; 264 species (181 endemic) in China.
By far the greatest diversity is in Asia, particularly in the C Asia, Himalayas, Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.
The taxonomy of the genus Saussurea in this treatment is based on the monograph by Lipschitz (Rod Saussurea, 1979). Saussurea is divided into five subgenera: Ericorynel, Amphileana, Theodora, Frolovia, and Saussurea. Subgenus Saussurea is divided into eight sections: Depressae, Jacea, Acaeles, Lagusanthera, Pycnocephala, Cyathidium, Rosulascentes, and Saussurea. For purposes of this treatment there is no need to divide the four other subgenera into sections.
The genus Saussurea is very varied. Many of the species are used medicinally, as for example: S. arenaria, S. epilobioides, S. involucrata, S. medusa, and S. stella.
