Herbs, subshrubs, or shrubs, usually strongly and pleasantly aromatic, densely tomentose, pubescent, glandular, viscid, or glabrescent. Leaves pinnate, rarely palmately divided or entire. Capitula globose, ovoid, or ellipsoid, in paniculate, spicate, racemose, or +/- corymbose inflorescences; involucral bracts in 3 or 4 series, scarious or herbaceous with scarious margins; receptacle convex or flat, naked or pubescent. Marginal florets pistillate, 3--10 or more, in 1(or 2) series; corolla tubular, rarely vasiform, cupular, or conical, 2(--4)-toothed; style exserted, apex acute. Central florets bisexual, several to numerous, in 2 or more series; corolla tubular, 5-toothed; anthers with an acute triangular apical appendage and 2 obtuse basal appendages; style ca. as long as or longer than corolla, divergent, and with a truncate or folding and pedicellate apex, or sometimes shorter than corolla, not divergent, and with a clavate or funnelform apex. Achenes obovoid, ovoid, or oblong, faintly striate; pappus absent or as a minute crown.

Approximately 380 species mainly in the northern hemisphere, but also in Africa, Australia, Central and South America; 187 species and 46 varieties occur in China.

Many species are rich in polyacetylenes, flavonoids, terpenoids, and cyanogenic glycosides and are well-known medicinal plants. Some are used to stabilize sand in desert or semidesert areas or as herbage for feeding livestock.
