Shrubs, less frequently perennial herbs, or small trees. Leaves opposite, simple or compound: ternate, biternate, ternate-pinnate, biternate-pinnate, or odd-pinnate. Inflorescence a terminal panicle or umbel of cymes. Flowers bisexual; calyx and corolla both connate, (3–)5-merous. Stamens 5, alternate with corolla lobes, and inserted at corolla tube (Viburnum, Sambucus); in Adoxa and Sinadoxa fertile stamens 5, 4 or 3, inserted at corolla tube and alternate with corolla lobes, cleft into 2 semi-stamens; anthers 1-celled, peltate, extrorse, longitudinally dehiscent; staminodes 5, 4, or 3, in inner whorl, opposite to corolla lobes. Ovary semi-inferior to inferior, 1- or 3–5-loculed; styles 5, 4, or 3, connate or free, or absent; stigmas capitate or 2- or 3-fid. Fruit a 1-seeded or 3–5-seeded drupe.

Four genera with about 220 species; mainly in the Northern Hemisphere; four genera and ca. 80 species in China.

Shrubs or small trees, deciduous or sometimes evergreen. Branchlets pubescent or glabrous; winter buds perulate or naked. Leaves simple, petiolate, entire, dentate, or lobed; stipules usually small or absent. Inflorescence terminal, compound, corymbose- or paniculate-cymose. Flowers small, actinomorphic, but sometimes marginal flowers of inflorescence enlarged, somewhat zygomorphic and sterile; bracts and bracteoles usually small and caducous. Calyx 5-toothed. Corolla white, rarely reddish, rotate or campanulate to tubular, 5-lobed. Stamens 5. Ovary 3-loculed, one locule fertile with a single ovule, and 2 sterile; styles short; stigmas slightly 3-lobed. Fruit a 1-seeded drupe with a compressed pyrene, red, black, or rarely yellow when mature.

About 200 species: mostly in temperate and subtropical regions of Asia and South America; ca. 71 species in China (??#endemic).

Doubtful species: Viburnum wrightii Miquel, Ann. Mus. Bot. Lugduno-Batavi 2(Prol. Fl. Jap. 155): 267. 1866. This species was recorded in FRPS as occurring in Anhui and Zhejiang, but we could not satisfactorily identify this species.

Doubtful taxa: Viburnum versatile R. H. Miao, W. B. Liao & Q. Y. Sun. 1999. Acta Sci. Nat. Univ. Sunyatseni, 38(6): 129 = not Caprifoliaceae but apparently Rubiaceae (Mal้cot, V. 2004. La diversit้ des Viburnum. Hommes et plantes 49: 22–27).

Branchlets of current year’s growth, winter buds, both leaf surfaces, petioles and inflorescences yellow-whitish or gray stellate-tomentose; branchlets slightly 4-angular, slightly gray-brownish, with dispersed, small, rounded lenticels. A form, Viburnum macrocephalum f. keteleeri (Carri่re) Rehder (=V. keteleeri), differs by having a inflorescence with large sterile radiant flowers only at the margin, and is distributed in W Anhui, W Hubei, Hunan, S Jiangsu, NW Jiangxi, and Zhejiang, growing in forests or thickets on mountain slopes and is also commonly cultivated. Viburnum macrocephalum var. indutum Handel-Mazzetti described from central Hunan may belong to this form.

Valery Mal้cot commented that merging Viburnum buddleifolium and V. rhytidophyllum seems inapproriate. On cultivated material, leaf pubescence and venation clearly separate the two taxa. Occurrence of putative hybrids between the two (called V. x rhytidocarpum) is less common than between V. rhytidophyllum and V. lantana.

This species is represented only by the type collection, which appears to have a premature inflorescence. Field work is needed to determine the identity of the species.

Valery Mal้cot commented that merging Viburnum awabuki and V. odoratissimum may be considered doubtful, They may be recognized as separate varieties (see H. Hara 1983: 196-199), and to Mal้cot’s knowledge, plants in cultivation under these names do not cross.

Shrubs or small trees, to 5 m tall. Branchlets yellow-whitish or pale brown, glabrous or subglabrous; winter buds 2-perulate. Petiole ca. 1 cm, sparsely stellate-pubescent, later subglabrous; leaf blade oblong or oblong-lanceolate, or elliptic to obovate, 5–10 (–13) ื 3–4.5 cm, papery, very rarely subleathery, glabrous or very sparsely stellate-pubescent on veins, intensely green and lustrous adaxially, lateral veins 4–6-jugate, mostly ending in teeth, together with midvein raised abaxially, impressed adaxially, base rounded to broadly cuneate, margin remotely serrate except at base, apex acute. Inflorescence paniculate, corymb-like due to shortening of inflorescence axis, at apices of short branchlets with 1 pair of leaves, (1.5–)3–4 ื (3–)4–5.5(–6) in diam., sparsely stellate-pubescent; peduncles 2–4.5 cm. Flowers on rays of 3rd
