                Shrubs or subshrubs. Stems and branches terete. Stipules present or absent. Leaves with 3 leaflets, medial one often larger than lateral ones. Racemes terminal or axillary. Calyx subcampanulate, 5-lobed; calyx teeth subequal. Corolla yellow or red, exserted from calyx; standard often elliptic or oblong, with calluses 2 at base; wings subequal to standard; keel broadly at base, apically from middle narrow, curved at almost 90°, not contorted. Stamens connate to monadelphous; anthers dimorphic, 1 rounded and dorsifixed, others oblong and basifixed. Style long; stigma capitate. Ovary stipitate. Legume oblong or ellipsoid-oblong, compressed, 2--10-seeded.

 

                About three species: tropical and subtropical Africa and Asia; one species (not endemic) in China.

                Subshrubs, 50--100 cm tall. Stems and branches terete, appressed brownish pubescence when young, glabrescent. Stipule subulate, often caducous. Leaves ternate; petiole 2--4 cm; petiolules less than 1 mm; leaflet blades rounded to oblong, 5--7 X 1.5--5 cm, with middle one longer than lateral ones, thin, abaxially slightly appressed pubescent, adaxially glabrous, base tapered, apex acuminate and mucronate. Racemes terminal, axillary, or opposited to leaves, 10--30-flowed; bract linear, 2--4 mm long. Pedicel 6--8 mm; bracteoles 2, basal to calytx tube and at middle or apical part part of pedicel, lanceolate-triangular. Calyx subcampanulate, 5--7 mm, pubescent, 5-lobed; lobes lanceolate, ± as long as to calyx tube, apex acuminate. Corolla yellow turning red when old, exserted from calyx; standard oblong, 7--10 mm; wings obovate-oblong, broader at base, apically from middle curved almost at 90°, not contorted. Legume ellipsoid, ca. 3 cm, compressed, covered with trichomes when young, glabrescent when mature; podogyne 4--5 mm. Seeds 4--8, hippocrepiform, smooth. Fl. and fr. Apr--Dec.
